Garage staple that deters plant pests from your garden

After you’ve created a stunning display of pots filled with beautiful flowers and shrubs, the last thing you want is to find a slippery critter is eating them.
Slugs and snails are two of the worst plant pests so we’re always looking for easy and, if possible, painless ways to get rid of them.
It turns out there is a cult-favourite product sitting in your garage or shed that will stop the pests in their tracks without any mess or harm.

That product is WD-40, which was given high praise as a pest deterrent in the Gardening UK Facebook group.
“Hi all if you spray outside of pots with WD-40, it saves your plants from slug and snail attack. It acts as the perfect barrier,” a gardener said.
The hack was backed up by other green-thumbs, including one who uses it to clean her pots at the same time.
“I spray it onto a soft cloth and wipe around all of my pots, makes them all look clean and new, deters slugs and it’s a water displacement so helps stop watermarks. My dad always did this in his garden.”
“It’s genius. They never get to my potted plants now with this stuff,” another said.

The reason WD-40 works so well as stopping slugs and snails from getting into pots was explained by nursery Nutley’s Kitchen Gardens.
“Spraying WD40 on the outside of pots or planters will make them too slippery for slugs to climb. This can be effective for pots and planters that sit on a path or patio, but should be kept away from soil or other plants,” they said.
You don’t even need to spray the entire pot with WD-40 as just a ring around the middle of it will be effective.

WD-40 is an affordable pest deterrent with a 255g can just $9.50 at Woolworths and Coles.
In addition to deterring plant pests, WD-40 can also be used to clean your gardening tools by removing rust and corrosion.
